Just found out its Mortons Neuroma

Post a new topicby livingwith on Thu Apr 24, 2008 12:25 pm

After 2 years of on and off pain I have just found out that I have a neuroma in my left foot. It is getting significantly more painful with it hurting on and off when I put weight on the ball of my foot. I am terrified on injections and have had orthotics and all types of padding for the last few years. I am thinking my only option will be surgery which can hopefully be done through the top of my foot. Heres hoping it can be fixed !!!

I was having "problems' for years but never thought it was anything serious. At times when I would walk it would suddenly feel like I was "walking on ice" and felt like I would lose my balance. I spoke with my father who said he experienced the same things at times so I just assumed it was something heriditary. Last year it started to get worse. First podiatrist I saw said it was neuropathy but nothing further. Checking on the internet didn't help me much. Podiatrist left on medical leave and I saw another one. This one gave me a "name" to it after examining my feet. Have had the cortisone shots twice. First one helped. Second one did not. Am trying to figure out options on my own. Massaging your lower legs and feet does help. I also go to a massage therapist for foot massages. She says she can feel the "crunchies" in my feet. I had mentioned that to the second podiatrist I saw and he is the first doctor who just looked at me and said "Yes, I know what she is talking about. You can feel them in your feet." The fill-in for my other doctor looked at me like I was nuts when I told him that. Try that option too. I still have not found a good shoe insole to use. If anyone has tried one that really helped..............................speak up!

Good Luck to you!

I just got home from the podiatrist, and have been diagnosed with Morton's Neuroma as well.
He told me that due to the fact that it is a nerve problem/mechanical problem in the foot, it cannot be relieved with gel insoles or cushioning on my part. Not to mention, mine is so far along that the only option I have to look forward to is surgery! He said he'll give me up to 3 cortizone shots, but after that the only option left is surgery. I will be getting casted for orthotics as well, but that will only dull the problem, not fix it. I'm terrified that surgery will end me worse for the wear than just dealing with the pain... Has anyone gone through the surgery, and if so what was the outcome?
