Strange Dressing for my B

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Aug 28, 2002 1:28 pm

I'm a diabetic and just had my entire big toe nail removed for an infection that was developing under a portion of the nail. My problem is that I am concerned over the strange type of dressing that the podiatrist used. He first applied a porcine graft over the nail bed and then covered the entire toe with some material that he said "acts like a poultice" and I must soak the toe in warm water THROUGH THE DRESSING 3 times a day. The whole toe was then bandaged and the bandage can't be removed until I see him in one week. This goes against ALL that I have been taught about antiseptic method and it has me worried to think what could be going on under those dressings! He did put me on a broad spectrum antibiotic, but as a diabetic, shouldn't I be changing the dressings daily and soaking my toe in something stronger than warm water to stop the growth of nasty organisms??? Can anyone out there explain this to me? Should I seek a second opinion just yet? Thanks for your response.
