Ingrown Toenails

In October I had a small bit of my big toenail removed, it was cracked and the doctor said it had a fungus. The small area felt different, slightly painful I assume to the fact the nail is gone. For a couple days I have felt a bit of pain in the area. I have looked very closely and see no ingrown nail. I have noticed that the nail is slowly growing back. My question is, could my pain be from the fact that the nail is growing up over the bare nail bed and perhaps it may be normal for a bit of pain?
