toe surgery

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Mar 26, 2002 3:06 pm

I have one bent toe on each foot. I've been to a podiatrist and he suggested surgery. I was wondering if my insurance would cover this. My toes are not too painful but they are very ugly and uncomfortable in shoes. The doctor said it was sort of like a hammertoe
I would also like to know if I can have surgery on both feet at the same time, and still be able to walk.Do I have to wear a special shoe and for how long? How long does it take to recover?Do I have to have pins in my toes to fix this? My toes have been this way for as long as I remember,so I think its more like a deformity, the doctor said my toes were too long and he wanted to remove a bone. Will I still be able to move my toe?

These are all questions that you should discuss with your doctor because he has examined your foot and knows exactly what is wrong and needs to be done. However, insurance will cover this and you probably can get both feet done at the same time but you will need to wear a special shoe for 2-4 weeks. You will be able to move your toe and a pin may or may not be necessary.

If you are not in pain, do not consider toe surgery. I made this mistake, and will regret it for the rest of my life. Remember, these "Drs" (and podiatrists are not MD's--they have not had as many
years of school as a real doctor) have
2 other strikes against them: 1) They
are in the business of "selling" these
so-called helpful procedures and 2) They
have not had the experience themselves
and do not know how painful the consequences can be.

These toe surgeries are horrible. Please ask around and talk to real people who have had this done. In my surveys 100% say they regret toe surgery
and wish they had never done it.

Where do you do these surveys? Where can I talk to people who have had this done?

The person with screen name gpain is angry about complications that occurred to him. However, you should know that his surveys are obviously not scientific and doctors, MD's as well as podiatrists, perform these surgeries because they do help. Finally, podiatrists have four years of medical school with a curriculum that is very similar to that od MD's. Have a nice day.

I just had this surgery done to four toes. I was back to work two days after the surgery and have not had any complications since then. I still have the stitches in, but from what I can see, my toes are no longer bent at the knuckle and my toes are shorter! I did the smart thing- I asked questions. If you don't ask questions, you won't know what to expect. I'm not one of gpain's 100% that agrees with him. Sorry- I am glad I had the surgery done thus far!
