Hammertoes

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue May 07, 2002 10:06 am

I have been having pain from calluses on my toes. The podiatrist said it from hammertoes. I am a nurse and I disagree. I have always had a very high arch in my feet and my toes go upward and them bend at the joint. This has always been nomal for me. The doctor although he x-rayed never even touched my feet. He stated that there is nothing that can be done to remove these calluses because they are from a bone deformity. I can squeeze the entire calluses and they are not connected to any bone. He said I should get an arch support. I thought hammertoes and arch supports were for flat feet. My arch is very large. What can you suggest, I sure would like to wear nice summer shoes.
Thanks!

Ideally, toes should be straight. When they bend at the joint, they are called hammertoes. Hammertoes cause pressure on the tops of toes when they are in shoes. This pressure results in corns which are not attached to bone but simply a thickening of the skin. Surgery is the only way to get rid of hammertoes and to remove the corns. However, you can also have the corns shaved down to the level of the normal skin so they are not as apparent. Arch supports will only help you minimally in your situation.
