Hammertoe Removal

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Aug 01, 2002 4:49 pm

My 77 yr old father in law is considering the removal of the 2nd toe on his right foot. He has a pronounced bunion and the hammertoe now rides upon the big toe and serves no purpose in balance or walking. It is very difficult for him to find shoes tall enough to accomodate his hammertoe He has Parkinson's Disease. A year ago, back surgery was required and he had an awful time with the anesthesia Now the question: What are the pros & cons of doing this surgery. Can it be conducted with a local vs. general anesthesia? Should this be discussed with an orthopedic surgeon vs. a podiatrist?
Thanks for your help! SGillette

An orthopedist or podiatrist will be able to help him. In most cases, the bunion should be fixed so the toes are aligned. However, in cases such as your father who has many medical issues, amputating the second toe is a good option. It is an easy procedure that heals very quickly and can be done under local anesthesia with light sedation.
