hammertoe plus loose ligaments??after x-rays and MRI have ruled out a stress fracture and probably a neuroma the orthopaedic Dr. says I have ligaments around the 2nd and 3rd metatarsals that have stretched out/worn out. I am unable to pull my second and third toes together. In addition, my second toe has a hammertoe
deformity, and my third toe is crooked. I have pain on the top of my foot in the area described which radiates toward my ankle and causes me to limp upon arising and occasionally have some trouble with weight bearing. Can you give me your take on the usual method of treatment for this? Would non-weight bearing for a period of time help, or do I need to have surgery? I've had an injection once before but know this is only a temporary fix. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.
Re: hammertoe plus loose ligaments??If the ligamnets are torn/stretched around the metatarsals, you have a condition known as pre-disocation syndrome. The hammertoes and crooked toes are probably increasing this problem as well. Therefore, casting will probably not help the condition improve. It is likely that you will need surgery to repair the ligaments and fix the hammertoes.
