Hammertoes/Claw Toes

I am interested in surgery for this condition. It makes me terribly self conscience and I want to have it corrected. How would I know if the metatarsal is "exceptionally short", therefore too short for surgery? Where can I get more info on treatment options and real patient results?

Hammertoes are easily corrected with surgery and the size of the metatarsal almost never matters so I am sure you would be a surgical candidate. Unfortunately, I do not know any websites that offer real patient results. You should see a podiatrist to discuss the details of the surgery. To the Podiatrist that responded, I appreciate your being so prompt. I'm somewhat confused however...the description your site provides on Brachymetatarsia specifically mentions that if a metatarsal is "exceptionally short" surgery may not even be an option. My question is in regards to a possible procedure to enlongate an unusually short toe and what determines whether or not it is too short to correct. I look forward to some clarification.

I apologize for the confusion. I thought you were asking about hammertoe surgery and not brachymetataria. If the metatarsal is extremely short, a bone graft may not be an option because it will only lengthen the area about 1 centimeter. However, callus distraction works very well even on very short metatarsals. Once an x-ray is taken, the doctor will be able to explain how short your metatarsal is and how much lengthening it needs. Then he or she will describe your different surgery options. Have a nice day.
