Newly diagnosed

Post a new topicby akp on Tue Dec 25, 2007 7:08 pm

About a month ago my podiatrist and then an orthopedic foot specialist diagnosed Charcot foot One thought some collapse and fracturing, the other not sure about that. Because of the neuropathy I don't feel much pain and can walk with ease, but they warn me against any use of the foot. How much can I believe of their diagnosis? I do not have diabetes though my brother and mother died from diabetic complications. A CROW boot is being made for me--a couple of weeks away, but until then, how much should I use my foot and continue my normal activities? I appreciate any advise I can get. I don't know anyone with the condition. Thanks, akp

I was just diagnosed and was reading your post and wondering how you are doing? I have some broken bones in my foot and will have the cast next week. My doctor put me in a boot and told me to stay off the foot until I get the cast.

I was diangosed with Charcot foot in January this year. I am finally out of the total contact casts and walking boot and into shoes with orthotics. My MD said that the goal was to allow the crushed bones to heal and he believes they have. I, however, will always have to watch for signs that it has become acute. I am not diabetic but I have neuropathy caused by Sjogren's syndrome. I will have to admit that I am still very frightened by the future and what might happen. Where I used to walk 3 miles/day, I am not supposed to walk more than 3 miles/ week. I just signed up for water therapy. I am obese but was told, although this hasn't beem good for me, it did not cause this process. So I know the casts are horrible, but it has worked for me. I am 42 and work as a nurse. I am not ready to think about retiring so I will follow all the " rules." If you find something that helps you, please share any hints with me. I can live with wearing shoes that are less than stylish or cute if it means I will be able to walk 10 yrs form now. Good Luck.

Sorry, me again. I just realized that my original podiatrist has an ad on this site. For anyone who worries about care from a podiatrist, I just want you to know, he was WONDERFUL. He actually started the search for the source of my neuropathy, didn't act like I was just an overwight woman who whined because her feet hurt. He referred me to an ankle specialist because he thought someone with more experience should assume care since I am fairly young but I am very happy with everything he did. I am thankful for everything he did and the ortho MD he sent me to. I am still mobile, without a brace, thanks to his quick treatment.
