How do I know if I have a callus or a bunion?I have developed a large, hard, and sore "thing" on the outside of my right foot. From what I have read, it appears bunions only grow near the big toe? This thing is on the outside of the foot near the little toe. It especially hurts when i wear one pair of a certain walking shoe. (I have two pair of the same shoe). The other pair does not cause the pain. I do have osteoarthritis, and have had some joint replacements...but this thing just seemed to develp in the last two-three months. Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between a callus and a bunion? It seems to be getting bigger also.
Re: How do I know if I have a callus or a bunion? What you appear to have is a corn formation on the side of your baby toe, or a nucleated skin lession which formed because of shoe pressure. It can be treated by having a podiatrist remove the thick tissue. Orthotics could also help take the pressure off the area. X-rays may show a bone spur causing the problem. Acallus is thick skin on the bottom of the foot. A bunion is formed because of poor foot biomechanics and the big toe bone drifts and forms a calcified type bursa.
Re: How do I know if I have a callus or a bunion?A bunion on the outside border of the foot just behind the 5th toe is commonly referred to as a Tailor bunion...indeed the pressure against the skin, created from within by the bony enlargement, and from the outside by your shoe, may also produce a callus lesion over this same area...refer to the tailor bunion and any anatomical pictorals to help discern the exact location...alterations of shoegear, activities, and various pads are the conservative measures to try first...if these fail surgery should be considered to resolve the issue before it progresses further...
